‘Right to rent’ Landlords and the 2014 immigration Act’

New Home office rules which make landlords responsible to check the immigration status of their tenants come into effect today.

They will only affect new tenancies dated from today onwards and at the moment; the rules are effective in the West Midlands region only. Although they are likely to be rolled out to the rest of the country soon.

It is essential that you make sure you understand the new rules as there are substantial fines for landlords who get it wrong. The Home Office is very keen to stress that the checks you need to make are simple and straightforward.

Very often, they are just about asking a new tenant to provide the same sort of ID that you would have done anyway and you can always contact the Home Office on a special hotline if in doubt about any tenant.

Coming from abroad certainly isn’t a reason not to offer someone a tenancy!

You can find more information on gov.uk and we will be posting a longer blog on this subject with more information in the new few days.
